Description
The Original MM (Multimedia Message) is a fundamental concept in the Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) defined by 3GPP. It refers to the initial multimedia message sent from a sender to a recipient. This message serves as the reference point for subsequent reports and replies, such as delivery reports, read-reply reports, and reply-MMs. The Original MM may also be subject to forwarding, allowing recipients to forward it to other users. The term was introduced in Rel-5 and has been carried forward through subsequent releases with minimal changes.
In the MMS architecture, the Original MM is created by the sender's MMS User Agent and submitted to the MMS Proxy-Relay. The Proxy-Relay then stores the message and notifies the recipient. The recipient's MMS User Agent retrieves the message and can generate a delivery report, read-reply report, or reply-MM. These reports and replies include a reference to the Original MM, typically via the Message-ID, so that the sender can correlate them. The Original MM can also be forwarded, in which case it becomes a new message with its own Message-ID, but the content may be preserved.
The Original MM is important for several reasons. First, it enables tracking of message delivery and read status, which is essential for many applications, such as notifications and confirmations. Second, it supports threaded conversations by allowing replies to be linked to the original message. Third, it facilitates forwarding, which is a common user behavior. The MMS specifications define the format and handling of the Original MM, including its encapsulation in the MMS PDU (Protocol Data Unit) and the use of headers like X-Mms-Message-ID.
Key components involved include the MMS User Agent, MMS Proxy-Relay, and MMS Server. The MMS User Agent is responsible for composing, sending, and receiving messages. The MMS Proxy-Relay handles the routing and storage of messages. The MMS Server may store messages for later retrieval. The Original MM is typically stored in the MMS Server until the recipient retrieves it, and it may be subject to retention policies.
The concept of the Original MM has remained stable across releases, with only minor wording changes. It is a core part of MMS and is essential for ensuring interoperability between different MMS implementations. As MMS evolved to support features like read-reply and forwarding, the Original MM remained the anchor for these interactions.
Purpose & Motivation
The Original MM exists to provide a clear reference point for multimedia messaging transactions. In any messaging system, it is important to distinguish between the initial message and any subsequent reports or replies. The Original MM serves this purpose by defining the initial message that is sent from a sender to a recipient. This allows the system to track the status of the message, handle replies, and support forwarding. Without this concept, it would be difficult to manage the relationships between messages and their associated reports.
The primary problem it solves is the need for a consistent way to refer to the initial message in a conversation. For example, when a recipient sends a delivery report, it must indicate which message is being reported on. Similarly, a reply-MM must reference the original message to maintain the conversation thread. The Original MM provides a unique identifier (Message-ID) that can be used for this purpose. This is essential for user experience, as it allows users to see the context of replies and reports.
Historically, the concept was introduced in Rel-5 as part of the MMS specifications. MMS itself was introduced in R99, but the detailed definitions of message types and reports were refined in later releases. The Original MM has been a stable concept, with only minor editorial changes. Its importance continues in modern messaging, where threading and delivery status are expected features. The Original MM ensures that MMS can support these features in a standardized way.
