Description
The read-reply report is a Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) feature defined in 3GPP TS 23.140 and related management specifications TS 32.270 and TS 32.272. It is feedback information sent by a recipient MMS User Agent to the originator MMS User Agent, describing the status of handling or rendering of an original Multimedia Message (MM) in the recipient's user agent. In essence, it answers the sender's question: was my message received, and was it displayed or otherwise processed?
MMS is built on a store-and-forward architecture comprising the MMS Relay/Server (MMS-RS), the MMS User Agent (MMS-UA), and interfaces such as MM1 between the user agent and the relay/server. When an originator sends an MM, they may request a read-reply report by setting a flag in the message header. The recipient's user agent, upon handling or rendering the message, generates a read-reply report and sends it back through the MMS infrastructure to the originator. The report travels as a separate MM, using the same store-and-forward mechanisms.
The report can indicate various statuses, such as that the message was read, deleted without being read, or that the recipient declined to send a report. The exact semantics are defined by the MMS specification and the user agent's implementation. Because the report is generated by the recipient's user agent, it reflects the recipient's actual handling of the message rather than merely its delivery to the recipient's mailbox. This distinguishes it from a delivery report, which confirms transfer to the recipient but not that the content was viewed.
Privacy and user control are important considerations. The recipient may be able to configure their user agent to always send, never send, or prompt before sending read-reply reports. This ensures that the feature respects user preferences and local regulations. The originator's request for a read-reply report is a request, not a guarantee; the recipient's settings and capabilities determine whether a report is actually returned.
The read-reply report is part of a broader family of MMS reports, including delivery reports and read-reply reports, which together provide visibility into message lifecycle. These reports are used in applications such as customer notifications, marketing campaigns, and enterprise messaging, where knowing whether a message was read has business value. The feature has been stable across releases, with only minor editorial changes to the definition wording over time, reflecting its maturity and continued relevance in messaging services.
Purpose & Motivation
The read-reply report exists to give MMS senders visibility into whether and how their multimedia messages were handled by recipients. Before such reports, a sender could only know that a message had been submitted or delivered to a mailbox, not whether the recipient actually opened or rendered it. This gap limited the usefulness of MMS for time-sensitive or confirmation-based communication.
By defining a standardized feedback mechanism, 3GPP enabled interoperable read receipts across different vendors and operators. The report is generated by the recipient's user agent, making it a reliable indicator of actual handling rather than mere transport success. This supports use cases in personal messaging, enterprise notifications, and marketing, where read confirmation is valuable.
The design also respects recipient privacy by allowing user control over whether reports are sent. This balance between sender information and recipient consent was an important consideration in the specification. Over time, the concept has influenced similar read-receipt features in other messaging systems, demonstrating its lasting impact on user expectations for messaging transparency.
