Description

An Operation Point is a concept defined in 3GPP specifications for immersive media services, particularly in the context of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) streaming. It represents a specific combination of media characteristics that a client device can support or that a server can provide. These characteristics include spatial resolution (e.g., 4K, 8K), temporal resolution (frame rate), color mapping (e.g., HDR, SDR), transfer functions (e.g., PQ, HLG), rendering metadata, and the encoding format (e.g., HEVC, VVC). An Operation Point essentially defines a profile of the media stream that can be independently decoded and rendered.

In 3GPP TS 26.116 and TS 26.118, which specify VR and AR streaming formats, Operation Points are used to describe the capabilities of devices and the characteristics of media streams. The concept allows for adaptive streaming by enabling the client to select an Operation Point that matches its capabilities and network conditions. For example, a high-end VR headset might support an Operation Point with 8K resolution and HDR, while a smartphone might only support 4K SDR. The server can encode multiple Operation Points and signal them to the client, which then selects the most appropriate one.

The Operation Point is typically signaled in the media presentation description (MPD) or similar metadata, allowing the client to make informed decisions about which stream to request. It is a key enabler for interoperability and efficient delivery of immersive media, as it provides a standardized way to describe media characteristics. The concept is also used in the context of viewport-dependent streaming, where different Operation Points may correspond to different regions of the 360-degree video.

Architecturally, Operation Points are defined at the media encoding and packaging level. They are used by both content providers and client devices to negotiate the best possible quality of experience. The 3GPP specifications define the syntax and semantics for signaling Operation Points, ensuring that devices from different vendors can interoperate. The Operation Point concept is flexible and can be extended to include additional parameters as media technologies evolve.

Since its introduction in Release 13, the definition of Operation Point has been refined to include rendering metadata, reflecting the growing importance of immersive media and the need for precise rendering information. The term has been stable across releases, with minor wording adjustments to improve clarity. It remains a fundamental concept for 3GPP immersive media services, enabling efficient and interoperable delivery of VR and AR content.

Purpose & Motivation

The Operation Point concept was created to address the challenge of delivering immersive media (VR/AR) over mobile networks, where device capabilities and network conditions vary widely. Before its introduction, there was no standardized way to describe the combination of media characteristics that a device could support, leading to interoperability issues and inefficient streaming. Operation Points solve this by providing a structured, standardized description of media profiles, allowing clients and servers to negotiate the best quality of experience. This is essential for adaptive streaming, where the client can switch between different Operation Points based on network bandwidth or device capabilities. The concept also supports the growing diversity of immersive media formats and rendering requirements, ensuring that content can be delivered to a wide range of devices without manual configuration. Its creation was motivated by the need for a common language to describe media characteristics in the emerging VR/AR market.
