Description

The Mobility Management (MM) Context is a critical data structure in GPRS and evolved packet core networks, representing the set of information stored in both the Mobile Station (MS) and the GPRS Support Nodes (GSNs) that pertains to the mobility management of a subscriber. This context is essential for tracking the location and state of a mobile device, enabling the network to route data and signaling messages correctly. The MM context includes parameters such as the subscriber's temporary identity (e.g., P-TMSI), the current routing area, the MM state (e.g., IDLE, STANDBY, READY), security-related information (e.g., ciphering keys), and other session management details. It is maintained in the Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN) and the Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN), as well as in the MS. When a mobile device attaches to the network, an MM context is created; it is updated during location updates and handovers, and released when the device detaches. The MM context is defined in 3GPP specifications such as 29.060 (GPRS Tunnelling Protocol) and 29.119 (GPRS Tunnelling Protocol for the control plane). In the context of 5G, the concept has evolved into the 5G MM context, which includes similar information for 5G systems, managed by the Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF). The MM context ensures that the network can efficiently manage subscriber mobility, security, and session continuity across different access technologies.

Purpose & Motivation

The MM Context was introduced in 3GPP Release 8 as part of the GPRS and later EPS specifications to provide a standardized way to manage subscriber mobility. Before its formalization, mobility management was handled in a more fragmented manner, leading to interoperability issues between different vendors' equipment. The MM context solves the problem of maintaining consistent subscriber state information across the MS and network nodes, which is vital for seamless roaming, handovers, and service continuity. It enables the network to quickly locate a subscriber, authenticate them, and establish data sessions without redundant signaling. The context also supports security procedures by storing ciphering and integrity keys. As networks evolved to 5G, the MM context concept was adapted to the 5G System, where the AMF manages the 5G MM context, ensuring backward compatibility and smooth migration. The MM context is fundamental to the efficient operation of mobile networks, as it allows for stateful management of user equipment, reducing latency and signaling overhead during mobility events.
