Description

The Forwarding MMS User Agent is a specific functional role defined in 3GPP TS 23.140 (Multimedia Messaging Service) that describes an MMS User Agent which is the intended recipient of a Multimedia Message (MM) and requests forwarding of that MM for delivery to other recipient(s) without having to first download the MM. This is a significant capability because it allows the recipient to redirect a message to others directly from the MMS Relay/Server, bypassing the need to retrieve the full content to the device first.

In the standard MMS architecture, the MMS User Agent resides on the mobile device and interacts with the MMS Relay/Server through the MM1 interface. When a message arrives for a user, the relay/server sends a notification (MMS Notification) to the user agent, which then typically retrieves the message content via a WAP or HTTP-based fetch operation. However, the Forwarding MMS User Agent can issue a forwarding request that instructs the relay/server to send the message to new recipients without the content ever being transferred to the forwarding user's device. This is particularly valuable for large multimedia content (high-resolution images, video clips) where downloading and re-uploading would consume significant bandwidth and time.

The forwarding operation involves the user agent sending a request to the MMS Relay/Server that identifies the original message (by its Message ID or URI) and specifies the new recipient(s). The relay/server then creates a Forwarded MM, sets the forwarding user as the sender of the forwarded copy, and delivers it to the new recipients. The original message content remains stored on the relay/server, and the forwarding operation is essentially a server-side redirect. This server-side forwarding model is efficient and aligns with the store-and-forward nature of the MMS architecture.

From a protocol perspective, the Forwarding MMS User Agent must support the appropriate MM1 operations for forwarding. These may include a specific forwarding request primitive or may reuse the standard message submission operation with a reference to the original message. The user agent must also handle any responses or error conditions from the relay/server, such as cases where the original message has expired from the server storage or where the forwarding user does not have permission to forward the content.

The concept is closely related to the Forwarded MM definition — the Forwarding MMS User Agent is the entity that initiates the creation of a Forwarded MM. Together, these definitions provide a complete picture of how message forwarding works in MMS: the user agent requests it, and the resulting message is a Forwarded MM with specific reporting and charging semantics. TS 32.272 covers the charging aspects, ensuring that forwarding operations are properly accounted for in the operator's billing system.

Purpose & Motivation

The Forwarding MMS User Agent role exists to address a practical limitation in early MMS implementations: the inefficiency of requiring users to download an entire multimedia message before they could forward it to others. Multimedia messages can contain large images, audio, or video files, and on early mobile networks with limited bandwidth, downloading such content solely for the purpose of forwarding it to someone else was wasteful in terms of time, bandwidth, and device storage. The Forwarding MMS User Agent capability allows the forwarding to happen entirely server-side, eliminating this inefficiency.

This concept also solves a user experience problem. When a user receives a message and immediately knows they want to share it with others, requiring a full download before forwarding creates unnecessary delay and friction. By enabling forwarding without download, the user can act on the message immediately upon receiving the notification, improving responsiveness and satisfaction. This is particularly important in scenarios where the recipient is on a constrained device or network.

Historically, the Forwarding MMS User Agent was defined alongside the Forwarded MM concept in 3GPP Release 5 as part of the original MMS specifications. The need for this role was recognized early in MMS development because the store-and-forward architecture naturally supports server-side operations. The definition has remained remarkably stable across releases, indicating that the fundamental approach to MMS forwarding has not required significant revision — a testament to the soundness of the original design. The only notable evolution has been minor editorial refinements to the definition text, with the core semantics unchanged since introduction.

Rel-5 Initial

Initial introduction of the Forwarding MMS User Agent term in 3GPP TS 23.140. The definition establishes that it is an MMS User Agent that is the intended recipient of an MM and requests forwarding of the MM for delivery to other recipients without having to first download the MM. This capability was defined as part of the original MMS architecture.

Minor editorial change — the leading article 'An' was removed, making the definition begin with 'MMS User Agent that is...'. The substantive meaning remained identical.

Minor editorial change — 'MMS User Agent' was changed to lowercase 'MMS user agent', and the conjunction 'that' was changed to 'and that' in the second clause. The meaning remained the same.

Definition carried over unchanged from Rel-8 wording ('MMS user agent that is the intended recipient...'). No substantive modification.

Definition carried over unchanged. The term remained stable.

Minor editorial change — 'MMS user agent' was changed back to 'MMS User Agent' (capitalized). The meaning remained identical.

Definition carried over unchanged from Rel-11 wording ('MMS User Agent that is the intended recipient...'). No substantive modification.

Definition carried over unchanged. The Forwarding MMS User Agent term remained stable.

Definition carried over unchanged. No modification to the definition text.

Definition carried over unchanged. The term continued without modification.

Definition carried over unchanged. No changes to the Forwarding MMS User Agent description.

Minor editorial reformatting — the definition text was reflowed onto a single line without substantive change. The meaning remained identical.
