Description

A Forwarded MM (Forwarded Multimedia Message) is a concept defined in 3GPP TS 23.140 (Multimedia Messaging Service) that describes a Multimedia Message which, after being originally sent from a sender to an intended recipient, is then forwarded to one or more other recipients. The forwarded message may be subject to further forwarding, creating a chain of message distribution. Critically, delivery reports and read-reply reports may refer to the forwarded MM, meaning that the original sender can potentially receive status information about the forwarded copies depending on operator configuration and user preferences.

The MMS architecture, as defined in TS 23.140, consists of several key functional entities: the MMS User Agent (which resides on the mobile device), the MMS Relay/Server (which stores and forwards messages), and various interfaces between them. When a user receives an MM and decides to forward it, the MMS User Agent initiates a new submission to the MMS Relay/Server, referencing the original message content. The relay/server then processes this as a new message submission with the forwarding user as the sender and the new recipients as the intended recipients.

The concept of a Forwarded MM is important for several reasons. First, it affects how delivery and read-reply reports are routed. When a recipient of a forwarded MM requests a delivery report, the report may be sent to the forwarder (the user who forwarded the message) rather than the original sender, depending on the MMS configuration. Second, it impacts charging — forwarded messages may be charged differently from original messages, and the forwarding user typically bears the cost of the forwarded transmission. Third, it has implications for content integrity and digital rights management, as forwarded content may need to be protected against unauthorized redistribution.

From a protocol perspective, the forwarding operation in MMS is handled through the MM1 interface (between the MMS User Agent and the MMS Relay/Server) and potentially the MM4 interface (between different MMS Relay/Servers). The forwarded MM retains its original content but receives new header information including the new recipient list and the forwarding user's identity. The message may also carry a reference to the original message, allowing the system to track forwarding relationships.

TS 32.270 and TS 32.272 define the charging and management aspects related to MMS, including how forwarded messages are accounted for in billing systems. These specifications ensure that operators can properly charge for forwarded messages and maintain accurate records of message flows through their networks. The Forwarded MM concept thus sits at the intersection of service delivery, charging, and user experience in the Multimedia Messaging Service ecosystem.

Purpose & Motivation

The Forwarded MM concept exists to formally define the behavior and lifecycle of multimedia messages that are redistributed beyond their original recipient. In early messaging systems, forwarding was often treated as a simple re-submission with no formal distinction from an original message. However, MMS introduced rich content (images, audio, video) and sophisticated reporting mechanisms (delivery reports, read-reply reports) that required clear semantics for forwarded messages. Without a formal definition, there would be ambiguity about who receives reports, how charging applies, and how the message should be handled by the relay/server infrastructure.

The concept addresses the limitation that delivery and read-reply reports in MMS need a well-defined target. When a message is forwarded, the original sender may or may not have visibility into the forwarded copy's delivery status. The Forwarded MM definition clarifies that reports may refer to the forwarded message, enabling operators to implement policies that balance user expectations (wanting to know if forwarded messages were delivered) with privacy considerations (recipients not wanting the original sender to know they forwarded the content).

Historically, MMS was introduced in 3GPP Release 5 as an evolution of SMS, enabling rich media messaging. The forwarding capability was considered essential from the start, as users expect to be able to share received content with others. The formal definition of Forwarded MM in TS 23.140 provided the necessary precision for interoperability between different vendors' MMS implementations and between different operators' networks, ensuring consistent behavior across the global MMS ecosystem.

Rel-5 Initial

Initial introduction of the Forwarded MM term in 3GPP TS 23.140. The definition establishes that a Forwarded MM is an MM originally sent from a sender to an intended recipient which is then forwarded to other recipients, and to which delivery/read-reply reports may refer. This coincided with the introduction of MMS as a new service in 3GPP.

Minor editorial change — the leading article 'An' was removed, making the definition begin with 'MM originally sent...'. The substantive meaning remained identical.

Definition carried over with the same wording as Rel-6 ('MM originally sent from a sender to an intended recipient...'). No substantive change from the previous release.
