Synchronization Signal Block (SS/PBCH Block)

Physical Layer →

SSB is a downlink physical signal in 5G NR, also called SS/PBCH Block, that combines synchronization signals and PBCH to enable UEs to perform cell search, time/frequency synchronization, and acquire essential system information.

Description

The Synchronization Signal Block (SSB), formally known as the SS/PBCH Block, is a fundamental downlink transmission structure in 5G New Radio (NR). It bundles together the Primary Synchronization Signal (PSS), the Secondary Synchronization Signal (SSS), and the Physical Broadcast Channel (PBCH), along with its demodulation reference signals (DMRS). The SSB is transmitted periodically by every NR cell and serves as the anchor for initial access, cell selection, and beam management procedures.

In terms of structure, an SSB occupies 4 OFDM symbols in the time domain and 240 subcarriers (20 resource blocks) in the frequency domain. The PSS occupies the first symbol, the SSS the third symbol, and the PBCH is mapped across the second and fourth symbols, with PBCH DMRS interleaved. The SSB is transmitted within a synchronization raster, and multiple SSBs can be transmitted in a burst set to support beam sweeping, especially in millimetre-wave frequencies. The SSB burst set is transmitted periodically, with a default periodicity of 20 ms, and the UE uses these transmissions to detect cells and measure signal quality.

The SSB plays a central role in the NR cell search procedure. The UE first detects the PSS to obtain symbol timing and physical cell identity (PCI) group, then the SSS to determine the exact PCI. The PBCH carries the Master Information Block (MIB), which includes essential parameters such as the system frame number (SFN), subcarrier spacing, and scheduling information for the remaining minimum system information (RMSI). The PBCH also carries information about the SSB index within a burst set, enabling the UE to identify the beam direction.

Beyond initial access, the SSB is used for radio resource management (RRM) measurements, including Reference Signal Received Power (RSRP), Reference Signal Received Quality (RSRQ), and Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise Ratio (SINR). These measurements are critical for mobility, beam management, and link adaptation. The SSB is also used in beam failure detection and recovery procedures, as well as for positioning enhancements in later releases.

The SSB is defined across a wide range of 3GPP specifications, including TS 38.211 (physical channels and modulation), TS 38.212 (multiplexing and channel coding), TS 38.213 (physical layer procedures), TS 38.214 (physical layer measurements), and TS 38.331 (RRC protocol). Its design reflects the flexibility of NR, supporting diverse deployment scenarios from sub-1 GHz to mmWave, and from traditional macro cells to dense small cells and unlicensed spectrum.

In summary, the SSB is the cornerstone of NR downlink synchronization and broadcast, enabling UEs to find, synchronize with, and camp on NR cells, while also supporting advanced features like beamforming and mobility.

Purpose & Motivation

The Synchronization Signal Block was created to address the needs of 5G NR, which required a more flexible and beam-friendly synchronization and broadcast design than LTE. In LTE, synchronization signals (PSS/SSS) and the broadcast channel (PBCH) were transmitted separately and were not designed for beam sweeping. NR, especially at higher frequencies, relies on beamforming, so a unified block that can be transmitted in different beams was necessary.

The SSB solves several problems: it provides a single, self-contained structure for initial synchronization, cell identity detection, and essential system information acquisition. It supports beam sweeping by allowing multiple SSBs per burst set, each potentially in a different beam direction. This enables UEs to discover cells and measure beam quality efficiently.

Additionally, the SSB serves as a measurement reference for mobility and beam management, replacing the always-on cell-specific reference signals of LTE with a more flexible, periodic signal. This reduces overhead and allows the network to adapt SSB transmission to deployment needs. The SSB design also facilitates operation in unlicensed spectrum and supports diverse numerologies, making it a key enabler of NR's scalability.
