Description

The Spatial Mapping Service is a 5G service defined in 3GPP Release 19 that enables mobile network operators to collect sensor data from various sources and construct a spatial map of an environment. This map represents the physical layout, including the positions of objects, obstacles, and features, and is used to enhance the accuracy and reliability of spatial localization services. The service is part of the broader effort to integrate sensing and communication in 5G, often referred to as Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC).

The service operates by gathering data from sensors embedded in network elements (e.g., base stations, UE) and possibly external sensors (e.g., cameras, LiDAR, radar). The data may include radio measurements (e.g., signal strength, time of arrival), as well as non-radio sensor data if available. The network then processes this data to create a spatial map, which is a digital representation of the environment. This map can be static (e.g., a floor plan) or dynamic (e.g., tracking moving objects). The spatial map is maintained and updated over time to reflect changes in the environment.

The architecture for the Spatial Mapping Service involves several 5G core network functions. The Location Management Function (LMF) may coordinate the collection of sensor data and the generation of the map. The Network Exposure Function (NEF) can expose the spatial map or related services to external applications. The Unified Data Management (UDM) may store subscription data related to the service. Additionally, the service may leverage edge computing to process sensor data locally, reducing latency and backhaul load.

The Spatial Mapping Service is closely tied to the Spatial Localization Service. The map provides a reference for localization algorithms, improving accuracy by accounting for environmental factors such as signal reflections, obstructions, and multipath. For example, in an indoor factory, a spatial map can help localize a robot by matching observed signal patterns to the map. The service can also be used independently for applications like environmental monitoring, smart buildings, and autonomous navigation.

The service is specified in 3GPP TS 22.156 and TS 22.856. In Release 19, the definition is: 'A service offered by a mobile network operator that gathers sensor data in order to create and maintain a Spatial Map that can be used to offer customers Spatial Localization Service.' This definition highlights the operator's role in data collection and map creation, and the synergy with localization. The service is expected to enable new use cases and business opportunities for operators, such as providing mapping data to enterprises for facility management or to public safety for incident response.

In Release 20, the definition remains unchanged, indicating that the service's fundamental requirements are stable. Future work may focus on enhancing the accuracy and granularity of maps, integrating with AI/ML for predictive mapping, and supporting real-time updates. The Spatial Mapping Service represents a step towards networks that are not only aware of device locations but also understand the physical environment, paving the way for truly context-aware applications.

Purpose & Motivation

The Spatial Mapping Service was created to enhance the capabilities of 5G networks by providing environmental awareness. Traditional localization services determine the position of a device but do not account for the surrounding environment, which can cause inaccuracies due to signal reflections, obstructions, and multipath. By creating a spatial map, the network can better interpret signals and improve localization accuracy. This is particularly important in complex indoor environments like factories, warehouses, and shopping malls, where GNSS signals are weak and multipath is severe.

The service also addresses the need for context-aware applications. A spatial map provides valuable information about the layout of an area, which can be used for navigation, asset tracking, and safety. For example, in an emergency, a spatial map can help first responders navigate a building and locate people. In a smart factory, it can help optimize the movement of robots and avoid collisions. The service enables operators to offer differentiated services beyond connectivity, tapping into the growing market for location-based and sensing applications.

Historically, spatial mapping was done using dedicated systems like LiDAR or cameras, which required separate infrastructure and were not integrated with communication networks. The 3GPP Spatial Mapping Service integrates sensing into the 5G network, leveraging existing infrastructure and spectrum. This convergence of sensing and communication is a key trend in 5G-Advanced and 6G. Release 19 is the first to define this service, building on the positioning enhancements of Release 16 and 17. It reflects the evolution towards networks that can sense their environment and provide rich contextual information, enabling new applications and business models for operators.
