Description

SMSIP UE is a term defined in 3GPP specifications to denote a User Equipment (UE) that supports the SMSIP MESSAGE capability. In essence, it is a mobile device or terminal that is capable of sending and receiving Short Message Service (SMS) messages encapsulated within SIP MESSAGE requests over an IP-based network, typically the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). This capability is crucial in networks that have transitioned to all-IP architectures, such as LTE and 5G, where traditional circuit-switched SMS delivery may not be available. The SMSIP UE is thus a fundamental component for ensuring that SMS remains a ubiquitous service.

The architecture supporting an SMSIP UE involves the UE itself, the IMS core network, and interworking functions like the IP-Short-Message-Gateway (IP-SM-GW). The UE must implement the necessary SIP stack and IMS client to construct and parse SIP MESSAGE requests containing SMS payloads. It registers with the IMS network and establishes a session for messaging. When the UE sends an SMS, it creates a SIP MESSAGE request with the SM in the body and sends it to the IMS core. The IMS core, specifically the Serving-CSCF (S-CSCF), routes the message to the Telephony Application Server (TAS) or directly to the IP-SM-GW. The IP-SM-GW then interworks with the legacy SMS network (e.g., SMSC) if the recipient is not an IMS user. For terminating messages, the IP-SM-GW receives the SMS from the SMSC, encapsulates it into a SIP MESSAGE, and delivers it to the SMSIP UE via the IMS core.

How it works: The SMSIP UE must support the SIP MESSAGE method and the specific encapsulation format defined for SMS over IP. It also needs to handle the registration and authentication procedures with the IMS network. The UE may use the Gm interface to communicate with the P-CSCF. The SMSIP UE may also support other IMS services like voice and video telephony. The key is that the UE is capable of handling SMS as an IMS application, without falling back to circuit-switched networks. This is particularly important for devices that are only attached to packet-switched networks, such as those in 5G standalone (SA) mode.

Key components of the SMSIP UE include the SIP user agent, the IMS client, and the SMS application. The UE must also support the necessary security mechanisms, such as IPsec for SIP signaling, and the appropriate QoS for messaging. The SMSIP UE may be a smartphone, a feature phone, or an IoT device. In the context of 5G, the SMSIP UE can be a New Radio (NR) device that supports IMS and SMS over IP. The term has been stable since Release 8, with no changes to its definition, reflecting its well-established role.

In summary, the SMSIP UE is a UE that supports SMSIP MESSAGE, enabling SMS over IP. It is essential for maintaining SMS service in all-IP networks and for interworking with legacy SMS systems. Its definition has remained unchanged across releases, indicating the maturity of the concept.

Purpose & Motivation

The SMSIP UE term exists to identify and define the capabilities of a User Equipment that can support SMS over IP. As mobile networks evolve from circuit-switched to all-IP architectures, the traditional method of delivering SMS over the CS domain becomes obsolete. Without a defined UE capability for SMS over IP, operators would face challenges in ensuring that SMS services continue to work for their subscribers. The SMSIP UE designation solves this by specifying the requirements for a UE to send and receive SMS via IMS, thus enabling operators to offer SMS as an IMS service. This is particularly important for LTE and 5G networks, where CS fallback may not be available or may be inefficient.

The motivation for defining SMSIP UE was to provide a clear specification for device manufacturers and network operators. By defining what it means for a UE to support SMSIP MESSAGE, 3GPP ensured interoperability and a common understanding of the capabilities required. This allowed the ecosystem to develop devices that can seamlessly handle SMS over IP, including the necessary SIP and IMS protocols. Before this, SMS over IP was not standardized, and devices might not support it, leading to a fragmented experience. The SMSIP UE term also facilitates testing and certification, as it provides a clear set of features to verify.

Furthermore, the SMSIP UE concept supports the migration to 5G, where SMS over IP is a key service for both consumer and IoT devices. It ensures that SMS remains a reliable and ubiquitous service, even as networks transition to all-IP. The term's definition has remained unchanged since Release 8, indicating its stability and the maturity of the underlying technology.
