Description

Registration is a fundamental procedure within the 3GPP Personal Network Management (PNM) framework, defined in Technical Specifications 21.905 and 22.259. It refers to the process by which a particular entity—either a physically separate device or a group of devices—is added to a Personal Network (PN) or a Personal Area Network (PAN). This registration is managed by the PNM functional entity in the home network and is distinct from the registration/attachment procedures of the Public Land Mobile Network (PLMN). An entity can be registered to a PN or PAN even if it is not currently attached to a PLMN, and vice versa.

The registration procedure involves the entity providing its identity and credentials to the PNM, which then verifies and authorizes the entity to become part of the specified network. Once registered, the entity's status is maintained until an explicit deregistration is performed. This persistent registration allows the network to apply specific profiles, such as the Registered Profile, and to manage services across multiple devices belonging to the same user. The registration status is stored in the PNM and can be queried by other network elements to enforce service policies.

Entities in PNM can be individual devices (e.g., mobile phones, laptops, tablets) or logical groups of devices. The registration process enables the grouping of devices into a Personal Network, which can be controlled and managed as a single unit. For example, a user might register a smartphone and a tablet to a PN, allowing them to share a common set of services or profiles. The registration also supports the concept of a Personal Area Network, which is a subset of the PN, typically comprising devices in close proximity.

The registration procedure is independent of PLMN registration. This means that a device can be registered to a PN even when it is out of coverage of the PLMN, and its PN registration status remains unchanged when it attaches or detaches from the PLMN. This separation allows users to manage their personal networks irrespective of their current mobile network connectivity. It also enables scenarios where a device is part of a PN but not actively using cellular services.

From an architectural standpoint, the PNM registration involves interactions between the entity (UE), the PNM server, and potentially the HSS/HLR for authentication and authorization. The PNM may use protocols such as HTTP, SIP, or proprietary interfaces for registration signaling. The registration information includes the entity's identity, the target PN or PAN identity, and possibly capabilities or preferences. Deregistration can be initiated by the user, the entity itself, or the network operator, and it removes the entity from the PN/PAN, ceasing any profile associations. Overall, registration is the cornerstone of PNM, enabling personalized and context-aware service management across multiple devices.

Purpose & Motivation

Registration was introduced to enable the management of multiple devices under a single subscription or user identity. Before PNM, each device operated independently with respect to the network, and there was no standardized way to group devices or share service profiles across them. The registration procedure solves this by allowing devices to be logically grouped into Personal Networks or Personal Area Networks, which can then be managed collectively. This is essential for services that require coordinated behavior, such as simultaneous ringing across devices or shared message storage.

The separation from PLMN registration is crucial because it decouples personal network management from cellular connectivity. Users can manage their personal network even when devices are not attached to the PLMN, providing flexibility and independence. This addresses scenarios where devices may use non-cellular access (e.g., Wi-Fi) or are temporarily out of coverage. The persistent nature of registration ensures that the network can remember the device's affiliation and apply the correct profiles when the device later connects.

Historically, the concept evolved from the need to support personalization and multi-device ownership. Early releases defined registration in the context of camping on a PLMN cell, but later releases redefined it specifically for PNM, reflecting the shift towards personal network services. This evolution highlights the growing importance of user-centric management in mobile networks, where users expect seamless integration of their various devices.

Release Timeline

Evolution Across Releases

An overview written from the defining specifications, not a verified change history. For the exact text, open the specifications listed below.

Rel-5 Initial

Initial definition in PNM context: 'This is the process of camping on a cell of the PLMN and doing any necessary LRs.' However, this definition was more about general mobility registration rather than PNM-specific registration.

Introduced in Rel-6

Definition changed to focus on Personal Network Management: 'In the context of Personal Network Management registration is the procedure by which a particular entity is either added to the Personal Network or to the Personal Area Network. Entities are physically separated devices or groups of devices. The entity stays registered till deregistration of the entity is performed. The status of registration to a Personal Network or Personal Area Network is not affected by the status of registration/attachment to the PLMN.' This marked a significant shift to PNM-specific registration.
