Description
A Relative Distinguished Name (RDN) is a fundamental concept from the X.500 directory services standards, adopted by the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP). It is not a full identifier itself but a component used to build a globally unique Distinguished Name (DN). An RDN is defined as an unordered set of one or more attribute-value assertions (AVAs). In its simplest and most common form, an RDN consists of a single AVA, such as 'CN=HSS01' (Common Name equals HSS01) or 'UID=12345'. This single AVA must be unique among all the immediate subordinate entries of a given parent entry in the Directory Information Tree (DIT).
Within the 3GPP architecture, specifically in the Network Management (NM) domain defined by the Technical Specification Group Service and System Aspects (TSG SA), RDNs are used extensively. The 3GPP management framework, including interfaces like Itf-N (the northbound interface of the Network Resource Model), employs an object-oriented information model where managed objects are identified by DNs. These DNs are constructed by concatenating a sequence of RDNs, starting from the root of the management naming tree and traversing down to the specific object. For example, a Managed Element representing a base station might have a DN composed of RDNs like 'MEID=PLMN-001', 'ManagedElement=Gnb-1'.
The structure and allowed attributes for RDNs are defined in 3GPP management object class definitions (e.g., in 32.600 series specifications). Each managed object class has a 'naming attribute' specified, which forms the basis for its RDN. The RDN provides a locally unambiguous name within the scope of its parent container. This hierarchical naming scheme allows for logical organization, scalable identification, and efficient navigation of the multitude of managed objects (e.g., Network Functions, equipment, subscribers, software) within a telecom operator's management system.
How it works in practice: When a management system needs to refer to a specific network resource, it uses its full DN. The DN is parsed as a sequence of RDNs. Each step in the sequence navigates one level deeper into the management information hierarchy. The uniqueness property of each RDN at its level guarantees the global uniqueness of the DN. This mechanism is crucial for all management operations—creation, retrieval, modification, deletion, and notifications—ensuring precise targeting of the intended managed object across the standardized management interfaces.
Purpose & Motivation
The RDN concept was adopted by 3GPP to solve the problem of uniquely and hierarchically identifying the vast number of managed entities in a telecommunications network. Prior to standardized management frameworks, proprietary naming schemes led to integration challenges between multi-vendor network elements and management systems. The need for a common, scalable, and structured naming convention was paramount for automated fault, configuration, accounting, performance, and security (FCAPS) management.
The motivation stems from the X.500 directory model, which provides a proven, hierarchical, and distributed method for organizing information. By using RDNs as building blocks for Distinguished Names, 3GPP created a flexible yet unambiguous naming system. This addresses the limitations of flat or non-standardized naming by enabling logical grouping (e.g., all objects belonging to a specific PLMN or a specific region), simplifying management queries, and supporting the inheritance of properties through the directory tree. It forms the backbone of the 3GPP Network Resource Model (NRM), allowing operators to manage complex, multi-technology networks (2G/3G/4G/5G) through a unified, object-oriented lens.
What changed in its specifications
The latest release-to-release comparison of specifications that define RDN. Each summary describes the whole specification, not only this term.
Rel-19 added external management data IOCs, discovery, notification retrieval, and single notifications. It added network slice lists in Area Scope, measurement conditions, and new data types for selecting instances via DNs, GeoAreas, or TAIs.
Full comparison in TS 28.622 →Rel-19 imported four attributes: isOnboardSatellite, onboardSatelliteId, storeAndForwardSupportInd, and nTNTAClist.

The Relative Distinguished Name (RDN) concept was introduced in 3GPP Release 99 as part of the foundational 3GPP management architecture, adopting the X.500/LDAP directory model. It established the hierarchical naming principle for identifying all managed objects within the Network Resource Model, providing the basis for standardized network management.
