Description

NR SL-U UE refers to a User Equipment (UE) that is capable of performing New Radio (NR) Sidelink communication in unlicensed spectrum bands. Sidelink, defined in 3GPP Release 16 and beyond, allows direct communication between UEs over the PC5 interface without network infrastructure. While initial sidelink deployments focused on licensed bands, Release 19 introduced support for sidelink operation in unlicensed bands, specifically bands n46 (5.9 GHz), n96 (5.9 GHz), and n102 (5.9 GHz), which are part of the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) spectrum.

The unlicensed bands n46, n96, and n102 are designated for V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communications in regions like Europe and the United States. Operating in these bands requires compliance with regulatory requirements such as Listen Before Talk (LBT) and other coexistence mechanisms to ensure fair sharing with other technologies (e.g., IEEE 802.11p). The NR SL-U UE must implement these coexistence features, which are specified in 3GPP TS 38.101 and TS 38.521 for RF and conformance aspects.

From an architectural standpoint, the NR SL-U UE operates in either network-controlled mode (Mode 1) or autonomous mode (Mode 2). In Mode 1, the gNB schedules sidelink resources on the unlicensed carriers, while in Mode 2, the UE autonomously selects resources from configured pools. The unlicensed operation introduces additional challenges such as dynamic channel access, interference management, and power control to meet regulatory constraints. The UE must support channel sensing, resource reservation, and collision avoidance tailored for unlicensed spectrum.

The physical layer design for NR SL-U UE includes enhancements to the sidelink physical channels (PSCCH, PSSCH, PSFCH) to accommodate unlicensed operation. This includes support for flexible numerology, wider bandwidths, and new reference signals for channel estimation in the presence of LBT gaps. The UE must also handle discontinuous transmission due to LBT failures, which impacts HARQ and scheduling.

NR SL-U UE is a key enabler for extending V2X and public safety communications into unlicensed spectrum, providing additional capacity and offloading licensed bands. It also opens opportunities for new applications in shared spectrum, such as industrial IoT and smart transportation. The feature is expected to evolve in Release 20 with further enhancements for coexistence and performance.

Purpose & Motivation

The NR SL-U UE was introduced to enable sidelink communication in unlicensed spectrum, addressing the need for additional bandwidth and capacity for V2X and other direct communication use cases. Licensed spectrum dedicated to sidelink is limited and often expensive, so leveraging unlicensed bands provides a cost-effective way to expand sidelink services.

Unlicensed bands n46, n96, and n102 are globally harmonized for ITS, making them ideal for V2X. However, operating in these bands requires adherence to regulatory rules, such as LBT, to coexist with other technologies like Wi-Fi. The NR SL-U UE incorporates these coexistence mechanisms, ensuring fair spectrum sharing while delivering reliable sidelink performance.

This UE type solves the problem of spectrum scarcity for sidelink and enables new deployment scenarios, such as offloading traffic from licensed bands and supporting high-density V2X environments. It also facilitates global roaming for V2X, as the unlicensed ITS bands are widely available.

Release Timeline

Evolution Across Releases

An overview written from the defining specifications, not a verified change history. For the exact text, open the specifications listed below.

Rel-19 Initial

Initial introduction of NR SL-U UE. The definition specifies a UE that supports NR Sidelink operation in unlicensed bands (e.g., n46, n96, n102), enabling direct device-to-device communication in shared spectrum with regulatory coexistence mechanisms.

The definition text carried over unchanged from Rel-19. The term continues to describe a UE supporting NR Sidelink in unlicensed bands, with no modification to the core definition in the available wording.
