Description
An NF service is a self-contained, reusable functionality that a Network Function (NF) exposes to other authorized NFs through a Service Based Interface (SBI). In the 5G Service Based Architecture (SBA) defined in 3GPP TS 23.501, the core network is decomposed into a set of NFs (such as AMF, SMF, UPF, AUSF, UDM, PCF, NRF, NSSF, NEF, and AF), each of which may expose one or more NF services. These services are consumed by other NFs through standardized HTTP/2-based RESTful APIs, using the SBI reference points (e.g., Namf, Nsmf, Nudm, Npcf, Nausf, Nnrf, Nnssf, Nnef, Naf).
The concept of an NF service is central to the modularity and reusability of the 5G core. Rather than defining monolithic network nodes with fixed interfaces, the SBA defines each NF as a producer of services and a consumer of services. For example, the AMF exposes the Namf_Communication service, which includes operations such as N1N2MessageTransfer, UEContextTransfer, and RegistrationStatusUpdate. The SMF exposes the Nsmf_PDUSession service, which includes operations such as CreateSMContext, UpdateSMContext, and ReleaseSMContext. Each NF service is composed of one or more NF service operations, which are the elementary units of interaction.
NF services are registered and discovered through the Network Repository Function (NRF). When an NF instance is instantiated, it registers its NF profile with the NRF, including the list of NF services it supports, the service instances, and the associated endpoints. Consumer NFs can then discover available producer NFs and their services by querying the NRF. This dynamic discovery mechanism enables flexible deployment, scaling, and load balancing in cloud-native 5G core networks.
Each NF service is identified by a Service Name (e.g., namf-comm, nsmf-pdusession, nudm-sdm) and is associated with a version. The service-based interface is defined in 3GPP TS 29.500 series specifications, which specify the HTTP/2-based protocol, the RESTful API design, and the data models (using OpenAPI/Swagger). The NF service operations are invoked using HTTP methods (GET, POST, PUT, PATCH, DELETE) on resource URIs, with JSON payloads.
The NF service concept also supports authorization and security. Only authorized NFs can consume a given NF service, and the authorization is enforced through OAuth 2.0-based token mechanisms, as specified in 3GPP TS 33.501. The NRF acts as the authorization server, issuing access tokens that grant specific NF services to specific consumers. This ensures that the service-based architecture is secure and that NFs can only access the services they are entitled to.
In summary, the NF service is the atomic unit of functionality in the 5G SBA. It enables a modular, scalable, and cloud-native core network where NFs can be independently deployed, scaled, and upgraded, and where services can be discovered and consumed dynamically. This design is a fundamental departure from the point-to-point interfaces of previous generations (e.g., 4G EPC) and is a key enabler of network slicing, edge computing, and service differentiation in 5G and beyond.
Purpose & Motivation
The NF service concept was introduced in 3GPP Release 15 as part of the 5G Service Based Architecture (SBA) to address the limitations of the 4G Evolved Packet Core (EPC). In the EPC, network functions were monolithic and communicated over fixed, point-to-point reference points (e.g., S1-MME, S11, S6a), which made the core rigid, difficult to scale, and slow to evolve. Adding new functionality required defining new interfaces and upgrading multiple nodes, which hindered innovation and deployment flexibility.
The NF service model solves these problems by decomposing the core network into modular, reusable services that can be independently developed, deployed, and scaled. It enables a cloud-native architecture where NFs can be instantiated as microservices, scaled horizontally, and upgraded independently. The service-based interfaces use standard web protocols (HTTP/2, REST, JSON), which allows the use of off-the-shelf API gateways, load balancers, and service meshes, reducing cost and complexity.
Furthermore, the NF service model enables dynamic discovery and authorization through the NRF, which supports flexible deployment topologies, multi-vendor interoperability, and network slicing. It also facilitates the integration of third-party services (e.g., via the NEF) and edge computing (e.g., via the UPF and local N6). The NF service concept is therefore a cornerstone of the 5G core, enabling the agility, scalability, and programmability required for diverse 5G use cases.
