Description

The MME area is a concept in the Evolved Packet System (EPS) that defines a geographical or logical region consisting of one or more Tracking Areas (TAs) that are served by a single Mobility Management Entity (MME). It is used for mobility management and paging optimization in LTE and 5G networks. The MME is a key control-plane element in the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) responsible for tracking and paging procedures, bearer activation/deactivation, and authentication. The MME area essentially represents the set of tracking areas that are under the control of a specific MME. When a User Equipment (UE) registers with the network, it is assigned to an MME, and the MME area defines the boundaries within which the UE can move without performing a Tracking Area Update (TAU) to change the serving MME. If the UE moves outside the MME area, it must perform a TAU, which may involve a change of MME. The MME area is composed of one or more Tracking Area Identities (TAIs), and each TA is identified by a TAI. The MME maintains a list of TAIs that constitute its area. This concept helps in reducing signaling overhead by allowing the UE to move within a set of tracking areas without notifying the network, as long as it remains within the same MME area. The MME area is defined in 3GPP specifications such as 24.301 (Non-Access-Stratum protocols for EPS) and 24.801 (3GPP TS 24.801). In 5G, the equivalent concept is the AMF area, which is the set of tracking areas served by an AMF.

Purpose & Motivation

The MME area was introduced in 3GPP Release 8 as part of the LTE/EPC specifications to provide a structured way to manage mobility and reduce signaling load. Before its introduction, in earlier networks like GPRS, similar concepts like Routing Areas were used, but with the flat architecture of EPC, a more efficient mechanism was needed. The MME area solves the problem of frequent location updates by grouping multiple tracking areas under a single MME, allowing UEs to move freely within this area without triggering a TAU. This reduces signaling traffic and battery consumption on the UE side. It also simplifies network planning and optimization, as operators can assign MMEs to serve specific geographic regions. The MME area concept is fundamental to the scalability of LTE networks, enabling efficient paging and mobility management. As networks evolve to 5G, the concept is mirrored by the AMF area, ensuring continuity and leveraging the same principles for the next generation of mobile networks.
