Description

ML Model Lifecycle Management is a management framework introduced in 3GPP Release 19 that defines the capabilities allowing a producer or consumer to manage different phases of the ML model lifecycle. As 3GPP networks increasingly integrate Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) into core network, radio access network, and management functions, the need for standardized lifecycle management becomes critical. This framework addresses the complete journey of an ML model from initial creation through deployment, operation, and eventual retirement.

The lifecycle of an ML model in 3GPP context encompasses several distinct phases. The first phase is model training, where an ML model is developed using training data. This is followed by model testing and validation, where the model's performance is evaluated against test data. Once validated, the model enters the deployment phase, where it is distributed to consumers (network functions or management entities that use the model for inference). During operation, the model's performance is monitored, and if degradation is detected, re-training may be triggered. Finally, when a model becomes obsolete or is superseded, it is decommissioned.

Architecturally, ML Model Lifecycle Management operates within the 3GPP management framework, which includes the Management Data Analytics Function (MDAF), the Network Data Analytics Function (NWDAF), and various management services defined in TS 28.104 and related specifications. The management capabilities are exposed through standardized service-based interfaces, allowing producers (entities that create and train models) and consumers (entities that use models for inference) to interact in a multi-vendor environment. This is essential for interoperability, as ML models may be produced by one vendor and consumed by another.

Key components of ML Model Lifecycle Management include model identification and versioning, which ensures that each ML model and its versions are uniquely identifiable. Model performance monitoring provides continuous evaluation of model accuracy and reliability in live network conditions. Model update and re-training mechanisms allow models to adapt to changing network conditions without service disruption. Model distribution and deployment capabilities ensure that models reach the appropriate consumers efficiently. Model decommissioning provides a graceful retirement process.

The framework also addresses coordination between multiple producers and consumers. In a typical deployment, an ML model producer (e.g., a management system or an AI/ML entity) trains a model and publishes it. Multiple consumers (e.g., RAN nodes, core network functions) may subscribe to and use the model. Lifecycle management ensures that when a model is updated, all consumers are notified and can transition to the new version in a coordinated manner. This prevents inconsistencies where different network functions use different versions of the same model, which could lead to suboptimal or conflicting network behavior.

ML Model Lifecycle Management is particularly important for Network Slicing, where different slices may require different ML models optimized for their specific characteristics. It also supports energy efficiency use cases, mobility optimization, and QoS prediction, where ML models must be continuously updated to reflect changing network conditions. The framework aligns with broader industry initiatives such as MLOps (Machine Learning Operations), adapting those principles to the specific constraints and requirements of telecommunications networks.

Purpose & Motivation

ML Model Lifecycle Management exists to solve the operational challenges of deploying and maintaining AI/ML models in live 3GPP networks. Before its introduction, ML models in telecommunications were often managed in an ad-hoc manner, with no standardized way to track model versions, monitor performance, or coordinate updates across multiple network functions. This led to fragmentation, where different vendors and network elements used incompatible approaches, making it difficult to ensure consistent behavior across the network.

The motivation for standardized lifecycle management stems from the recognition that ML models are not static artifacts. They degrade over time as network conditions change, requiring re-training and updates. Without proper lifecycle management, a model that was accurate at deployment may become unreliable months later, leading to poor network performance. Additionally, the multi-vendor nature of 3GPP networks means that models may be produced by one entity and consumed by another, necessitating standardized interfaces and procedures for model management.

Previous approaches lacked a comprehensive framework. Early AI/ML integration in 3GPP (Releases 17 and 18) focused primarily on defining AI/ML enablers and use cases, such as NWDAF for network analytics. However, these efforts did not fully address the end-to-end lifecycle of ML models. Release 19's ML Model Lifecycle Management fills this gap by providing a holistic framework that covers all phases from training to decommissioning, ensuring that AI/ML can be reliably operated at scale in production networks.
