Description
The IRP Solution Set is a fundamental concept in the 3GPP Integration Reference Point (IRP) framework, introduced in Release 4. It represents the concrete, technology-specific mapping of an IRP Information Service to a particular protocol or data modeling technology. While the IRP Information Service defines the abstract operations, notifications, and support objects, the IRP Solution Set translates these into the syntax and semantics of a specific technology, such as CORBA/IDL, SNMP/SMI, CMIP/GDMO, or XML. An IRP Information Service can be mapped to multiple Solution Sets, allowing the same management functionality to be implemented over different protocols depending on the network operator's preferences or existing infrastructure.
The IRP Solution Set is the final layer in the IRP modeling hierarchy: Information Model (Information Service + Network Resource Model) → Solution Set. The Solution Set specifies the exact protocol data units, encoding rules, and interaction patterns required to realize the Information Service. For example, the Alarm IRP Information Service might be mapped to a CORBA Solution Set, which defines IDL interfaces and data types for alarm operations, or to an SNMP Solution Set, which defines MIB objects and SNMP PDUs. Each mapping is documented in a separate 3GPP Technical Specification (TS), such as 32.111 for CORBA or 32.121 for SNMP variants.
The architecture of an IRP Solution Set is driven by the need for interoperability and flexibility. By separating the abstract information model from the concrete solution set, 3GPP enables vendors to implement management interfaces using the technology that best suits their product line, while still conforming to a common information model. This separation also allows network operators to choose a management technology that aligns with their operations support systems (OSS) and avoids proprietary lock-in.
The Solution Set typically includes a mapping of operations to protocol methods, a mapping of notifications to protocol events, and a mapping of support objects to protocol data structures. It may also include state management rules, error handling, and security considerations. The choice of solution set can vary by functional area and by network element, providing a high degree of flexibility.
Over the releases, the IRP Solution Set definition has remained stable, reflecting its role as a stable abstraction. New solution sets may be added as new technologies emerge (e.g., REST/HTTP for 5G management), but the concept remains the same. The IRP Solution Set is essential for enabling multi-vendor management and for automating network operations across diverse technologies.
Purpose & Motivation
The IRP Solution Set exists to bridge the gap between abstract management specifications and concrete implementations. Before its introduction, management interfaces were often defined directly in a specific technology, which made it difficult to adapt to different environments or to integrate with diverse OSS systems. The Solution Set solves this by providing a clear mapping from the technology-independent Information Service to a chosen protocol technology.
The motivation for this approach was the need for flexibility and interoperability in multi-vendor networks. Network operators often have OSS systems based on different technologies (e.g., CORBA, SNMP, or CMIP), and they need to manage equipment from multiple vendors. By standardizing both the Information Service and the Solution Set, 3GPP enabled vendors to implement management interfaces that can be integrated into any OSS, regardless of the underlying technology.
Additionally, the Solution Set concept future-proofs management interfaces. As new protocols and technologies emerge, the same Information Service can be mapped to a new Solution Set without changing the abstract model. This has allowed the IRP framework to evolve from 2G to 5G and beyond, supporting new management needs such as network slicing and virtualization. The IRP Solution Set is thus a key enabler for interoperable, scalable, and future-proof network management.
