Description

An Invalid SID (Silence Insertion Descriptor) frame is a specific type of frame in discontinuous transmission (DTX) operation of speech codecs, such as AMR and EVS. During periods of silence, the transmitter sends SID frames to update the comfort noise generation (CNG) parameters at the receiver. A SID frame contains information about the background noise characteristics. An invalid SID frame is one that is received and accepted (i.e., not discarded) but contains errors that make it unsuitable for updating the comfort noise parameters. Specifically, it is defined as an accepted SID frame with BFI=1 (Bad Frame Indicator), or an accepted SID frame with BFI=0 where the SID field deviates in more than one bit position from the expected SID code word (with flag SID=1).

The purpose of an invalid SID frame is to allow the receiver to maintain comfort noise generation even when the SID information is corrupted. Although the frame cannot be used to update the noise parameters, it still conveys the information that comfort noise should be started or continued. This prevents unnecessary muting or abrupt changes in background noise, which would degrade the user experience. The receiver typically uses the last valid SID parameters to continue generating comfort noise until a valid SID frame is received.

In the architecture of a speech codec, the receiver's DTX handler processes incoming frames and classifies them as valid SID, invalid SID, or no data. The classification is based on the BFI and the SID field consistency. The BFI is set by the transport layer (e.g., RTP) based on CRC checks or other error detection mechanisms. If the BFI indicates a bad frame, the SID frame is considered invalid regardless of its content. If the BFI is good but the SID field is inconsistent (more than one bit error from the expected code word), it is also deemed invalid. This dual criterion ensures that only reliable SID updates are used.

The handling of invalid SID frames is specified in 3GPP TS 46.031, 46.041, and 46.081 for the AMR and other codecs. These specifications define the exact conditions and the receiver behavior. The invalid SID frame concept is crucial for maintaining a pleasant background noise during silence, which is important for perceived call quality. Without it, errors in SID frames could cause the comfort noise to freeze or reset, leading to unnatural silence or noise bursts.

In summary, the invalid SID frame is a robustness mechanism in DTX that ensures continuous comfort noise generation despite corrupted SID information. It balances the need for accurate noise updates with the need for uninterrupted service, contributing to efficient bandwidth usage and high speech quality in mobile networks.

Purpose & Motivation

The invalid SID frame concept was introduced to address the challenges of transmitting comfort noise parameters over error-prone channels. In DTX operation, SID frames are sent infrequently, so each frame is important for updating the background noise characteristics. However, if a SID frame is corrupted during transmission, simply discarding it could cause the receiver to stop comfort noise generation or to use outdated parameters, leading to audible artifacts. The invalid SID frame allows the receiver to recognize that a SID frame was intended, even if its content is unreliable, and to continue comfort noise generation using previous parameters. This improves robustness and user experience without requiring additional bandwidth or complex error correction.

Before this concept, receivers might have treated any corrupted SID frame as a lost frame, potentially causing comfort noise to be muted or reset. The introduction of invalid SID frames in Release 8 provided a standardized way to handle such errors, ensuring consistent behavior across different implementations. It reflects the maturity of speech codec design, where even error conditions are carefully managed to maintain quality. This is particularly important in mobile networks where channel errors are common, and seamless DTX operation is essential for capacity and power efficiency.

Rel-8 Initial

Initial definition introduced: 'accepted SID frame with BFI=1, or accepted SID frame with BFI=0, in which the SID field deviates in more than 1 bit position from the SID code word (flag SID=1). This frame is not valid for updating comfort noise parameters, but the frame conveys information that comfort noise generations should be started or continued.'
