Description
An Intra-band SL CA UE (Intra-band Sidelink Carrier Aggregation User Equipment) is a UE that supports NR Sidelink Carrier Aggregation (CA) operation in a single operating band. This feature is defined in 3GPP TS 38.101 (NR UE radio transmission and reception) and TS 38.521 (NR UE conformance testing). Sidelink CA allows a UE to transmit and receive on multiple Sidelink component carriers simultaneously, all within the same frequency band, to achieve higher data rates and improved reliability for direct communication between devices. The term 'intra-band' indicates that all aggregated carriers belong to the same operating band, as opposed to inter-band CA where carriers are in different bands.
In NR Sidelink, carrier aggregation was introduced to enhance the performance of V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) and other direct communication services. A UE supporting intra-band SL CA can use multiple contiguous or non-contiguous carriers within a band to increase the overall bandwidth. For example, in the 5.9 GHz ITS band, a UE might aggregate two 20 MHz carriers to achieve 40 MHz of bandwidth, thereby doubling the peak data rate. The UE must support the necessary RF capabilities, including multiple transmit and receive chains, to handle the aggregated carriers. The baseband processing must also be capable of managing multiple carriers, including scheduling, HARQ, and multiplexing.
The operation of intra-band SL CA involves the UE monitoring and transmitting on multiple carriers. The Sidelink resource allocation is controlled by the network (when in coverage) or by a pre-configuration (when out of coverage). The network can configure the UE with a set of carriers for Sidelink operation, and the UE can aggregate them according to its capabilities. The UE signals its support for intra-band SL CA to the network via UE capability information, indicating the supported band combinations and the maximum number of carriers. The network then uses this information to configure the Sidelink appropriately.
From a protocol perspective, the Sidelink CA operation affects the physical layer (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) layers. The PHY layer must handle multiple carriers, including synchronization, channel estimation, and modulation/demodulation for each carrier. The MAC layer must manage the multiplexing of data across carriers, handle HARQ processes for each carrier, and ensure efficient resource utilization. The RLC and PDCP layers may also be impacted, as they need to handle the increased data rates and potentially reordering due to multiple carriers. The UE must also manage its power consumption, as operating multiple carriers increases power usage, which is a critical constraint for battery-powered devices.
Intra-band SL CA is particularly beneficial for advanced V2X use cases such as sensor data sharing, cooperative perception, and platooning, where high throughput and low latency are required. It allows vehicles to exchange large amounts of data (e.g., raw sensor data, high-definition maps) directly with each other, reducing the load on the cellular network and enabling real-time coordination. The feature was introduced in Release 19 as part of the enhancements for NR Sidelink, building on the CA framework defined for the Uu interface. Release 20 maintains the same definition, indicating that the fundamental concept remains stable.
Purpose & Motivation
The Intra-band SL CA UE concept was created to address the growing demand for higher data rates and improved reliability in direct device-to-device communication, particularly for V2X applications. Prior to Release 19, NR Sidelink operated on a single carrier, which limited the achievable throughput and spectral efficiency. For advanced use cases like cooperative perception, where vehicles share high-resolution sensor data, a single carrier was insufficient. Intra-band CA allows the UE to aggregate multiple carriers within the same band, effectively multiplying the bandwidth and data rate without requiring additional spectrum in different bands.
The motivation also includes the need for better reliability and latency. By using multiple carriers, the UE can employ techniques such as carrier diversity and redundant transmissions to improve the probability of successful reception, which is critical for safety-related V2X messages. Intra-band operation is often preferred because it simplifies RF design compared to inter-band CA, as the carriers are close in frequency and can share some RF components. It also allows for more efficient use of fragmented spectrum within a band.
Historically, Sidelink CA was first studied in LTE Release 14/15 but was not widely deployed. With NR Sidelink in Release 16/17, the foundation for CA was laid, but intra-band CA for Sidelink was not fully specified until Release 19. The introduction of intra-band SL CA UE capability provides a standardized way for UEs to indicate their support and for networks to configure the feature, ensuring interoperability. It addresses the limitations of single-carrier Sidelink by providing a scalable path to higher performance.
