Description

The IubcLink is a managed function defined in the 3GPP Generic Network Resource Model (NRM), specifically within the GenericNetworkResourcesNRMDefs. It represents the common transport link (Iubc) between a Radio Network Controller (RNC) and a NodeB in a UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN). The Iub interface is the logical interface between the RNC and NodeB, and it carries both user data and control signaling. The IubcLink specifically models the common transport resources that are shared among multiple user-plane and control-plane bearers on the Iub interface.

In the 3GPP management architecture, the IubcLink is an instance of the ManagedFunction class, which is a generic class for representing managed functions in the network. The IubcLink is contained within the IubLink managed object, which represents the entire Iub interface. The IubcLink provides attributes and parameters that allow the network management system to configure and monitor the common transport resources, such as the transport layer address, the transport layer port, and the quality of service parameters for the common transport.

The IubcLink is defined in 3GPP Technical Specification 28.703, which specifies the Generic Network Resource Model (NRM) for UTRAN. It is also referenced in TS 32.636, which specifies the configuration management (CM) for UTRAN. The IubcLink is used by the network management system to manage the Iub interface's common transport resources, ensuring efficient utilization and proper configuration.

The IubcLink has been part of the 3GPP specifications since Release 10. Its definition has remained unchanged across all subsequent releases up to Release 19, indicating a stable and mature specification. The IubcLink is a crucial component for managing the transport resources of the Iub interface, enabling operators to configure and optimize the backhaul network for UTRAN.

Purpose & Motivation

The IubcLink exists to provide a standardized management representation of the common transport resources on the Iub interface between an RNC and a NodeB. In UTRAN deployments, the Iub interface is critical for carrying user traffic and control signaling between the radio access network and the core network. The common transport resources are shared among multiple bearers, and efficient management of these resources is essential for ensuring quality of service and optimal network performance.

Before the introduction of the IubcLink, the management of Iub transport resources was less structured, and there was no standardized way to represent the common transport link in the NRM. The IubcLink addresses this by providing a clear, standardized managed object that can be configured and monitored by the network management system. This allows operators to manage the Iub interface more effectively, including the ability to set QoS parameters, monitor performance, and troubleshoot issues.

The IubcLink also supports the evolution of UTRAN towards higher capacities and more efficient transport. By providing a standardized management interface, it enables multi-vendor interoperability and simplifies network operations. The IubcLink is part of the broader 3GPP management framework, which aims to provide a consistent and scalable management solution for mobile networks.
