Description

The Interface HNBProfile (Home NodeB Profile) is a managed object defined within the Generic Network Resources Network Resource Model (NRM) as specified in 3GPP TS 28.673 and TS 32.776. It represents a configuration profile for Home NodeB (HNB) network elements, providing a standardized template that defines the operational parameters and characteristics of HNBs. The HNBProfile is modeled as a subclass of GenericNetworkResourcesNRMDefs::ManagedFunction, inheriting the common management capabilities while adding profile-specific attributes.

In the Home NodeB architecture, profiles play a crucial role in simplifying the management of large numbers of home base stations. Rather than configuring each HNB individually, operators can define profiles that capture common configuration settings and apply them to groups of HNBs. This approach significantly reduces the management overhead and ensures consistency across deployments. The HNBProfile managed object provides the standardized representation of these profiles within the 3GPP management framework.

The HNBProfile typically contains parameters such as radio configuration settings, access control parameters, QoS profiles, and security configurations. These parameters define how the HNB operates within the network and what services it provides to users. For example, the profile may specify the maximum transmit power, the supported frequency bands, the access mode (open, closed, or hybrid), and the list of authorized users for closed subscriber group (CSG) operation.

As a managed function within the Generic Network Resources NRM, the HNBProfile supports standard management operations. Management systems can create, modify, and delete profiles, as well as query their attributes. The profile can be associated with specific HNB instances, allowing the management system to track which HNBs are using which profiles. This association enables efficient bulk configuration changes: when a profile is modified, all HNBs using that profile can be updated accordingly.

The Generic Network Resources NRM provides the structural framework for the HNBProfile. The NRM defines how managed objects are organized and related to each other. The HNBProfile is typically contained within a SubNetwork or ManagedElement object, and it may be referenced by HNB managed objects. This hierarchical and referential structure enables efficient management of complex HNB deployments with many profiles and many HNBs.

Since its introduction in Release 10, the HNBProfile has been part of the 3GPP management standards supporting Home NodeB deployments. Release 10 introduced the Generic Network Resources NRM, which provided a more flexible and extensible framework for modeling managed objects. The HNBProfile was defined within this framework to address the specific need for standardized profile management in femtocell deployments. Over subsequent releases, the profile concept has been extended and refined to support new features and capabilities as they were added to the 3GPP specifications.

Purpose & Motivation

The HNBProfile exists to provide a standardized, reusable configuration template for Home NodeBs within the 3GPP management architecture. In large-scale femtocell deployments, operators may need to manage thousands or millions of HNBs. Configuring each HNB individually would be impractical and error-prone. The HNBProfile solves this problem by allowing operators to define common configuration settings once and apply them to many HNBs, ensuring consistency and reducing management overhead.

The profile concept also addresses the need for different types of HNB configurations. Different deployment scenarios may require different settings: a residential HNB may have different requirements than an enterprise HNB, and a CSG HNB may have different requirements than an open-access HNB. The HNBProfile allows operators to define multiple profiles, each tailored to a specific deployment scenario, and to assign the appropriate profile to each HNB.

Historically, the HNBProfile was introduced in Release 10 as part of the Generic Network Resources NRM. This was a period of rapid growth in femtocell deployments, and the need for efficient management solutions was becoming critical. The 3GPP management architecture was evolving towards the IRP-based approach, which provided a more modular and extensible framework. The HNBProfile represents the application of this framework to the specific needs of HNB configuration management, providing a building block that operators can use to build scalable and efficient management solutions for their femtocell networks.
