Description
The EUtranCellSON interface is a 3GPP-defined network management interface that represents the Self-Organizing Network (SON) capabilities of an E-UTRAN cell. It is specified in 3GPP TS 28.629 and TS 32.526. Unlike the centralized SON interface (EUtranCellNMCentralizedSON), which is focused on the Network Manager (NM) level, the EUtranCellSON interface is typically used at the Element Manager (EM) level or for direct interaction with the eNB. It supports the management of SON functions that can be distributed (running in the eNB) or hybrid (a combination of centralized and distributed). The interface is part of the Generic Network Resources NRM and is defined as a subclass of Top.
The EUtranCellSON interface provides operations to manage the SON features of a specific E-UTRAN cell. These features include:
- Self-configuration: Automatic configuration of new cells, including parameters like physical cell identity (PCI), tracking area code (TAC), and neighbor relations. - Self-optimization: Continuous optimization of network performance, including mobility robustness optimization (MRO), mobility load balancing (MLB), random access channel (RACH) optimization, and energy saving. - Self-healing: Automatic detection and recovery from failures, such as cell outage compensation.
The interface allows the management system to retrieve the current SON configuration and status, set SON parameters and policies, and receive notifications about SON-related events. It is designed to be vendor-agnostic, enabling multi-vendor interoperability. The interface can be mapped to various protocols, such as CORBA, SOAP, or RESTful HTTP, depending on the IRP solution set.
The EUtranCellSON interface is essential for operators to automate network operations and reduce OPEX. It enables the integration of SON functions into the overall network management system, allowing for centralized monitoring and control even when the SON algorithms are distributed. This is particularly important in heterogeneous networks where many small cells are deployed, and manual optimization is not feasible.
The interface has been part of 3GPP specifications since Release 10 and has evolved to support new SON use cases and technologies. It is a key component of the E-UTRAN management architecture and continues to be relevant in 5G networks, where SON principles are extended to NR (New Radio) and network slicing.
Purpose & Motivation
The EUtranCellSON interface was created to provide a standardized way to manage SON functions in E-UTRAN cells, addressing the need for automation in increasingly complex LTE networks. As networks evolved with the introduction of small cells, heterogeneous deployments, and diverse services, manual configuration and optimization became error-prone and expensive. SON was introduced to automate these tasks, but different vendors implemented proprietary management interfaces, hindering multi-vendor integration. The EUtranCellSON interface solves this by defining a common set of managed objects and operations for SON management, allowing operators to manage SON functions from different vendors in a consistent manner. It supports both distributed and hybrid SON architectures, giving operators flexibility in how they deploy SON. The interface also enables the integration of SON with other management functions, such as performance management and fault management, to provide a comprehensive view of network health and performance. By standardizing the management of SON, the interface facilitates the adoption of SON technology and helps operators achieve the benefits of automation, such as improved network quality, reduced OPEX, and faster time-to-market for new services.
