Description
Generic Virtualized Network Product (GVNP) is a Rel-19 security framework specified in 3GPP TS 33.730 and studied in TR 33.927. It addresses the security assurance of virtualized network products, which include Virtualized Network Functions (VNFs) and Containerized Network Functions (CNFs) deployed in NFV and cloud-native environments. GVNP provides a generic set of security requirements and test cases that can be applied to any virtualized network product, independent of the specific function it implements.
The framework is built around the concept of a Security Assurance Specification (SCAS) for virtualized products. It defines a catalog of security requirements covering areas such as secure boot, integrity protection, access control, isolation, logging, and vulnerability management. These requirements are expressed in a generic manner so that they can be reused across different types of network functions, reducing duplication and ensuring a consistent security baseline. The GVNP concept also includes a methodology for security testing and evaluation, enabling vendors to demonstrate compliance and operators to assess products.
Architecturally, GVNP sits within the 3GPP security assurance framework, which already includes SCAS for specific network functions like AMF, SMF, UPF, and gNB. GVNP extends this by providing a generic layer that applies to the virtualized infrastructure and the product as a whole. It interacts with NFV security specifications (e.g., ETSI NFV SEC) and cloud-native security best practices. The framework considers the entire lifecycle: development, deployment, operation, and decommissioning, with requirements for secure update and patching.
Key components of GVNP include: (1) a generic security requirements catalog; (2) test cases and evaluation criteria; (3) a mapping to existing SCAS for specific NFs; and (4) guidance on handling virtualization-specific threats such as hypervisor attacks, container escapes, and multi-tenancy risks. The framework also addresses the security of management and orchestration (MANO) interfaces and the underlying virtualized infrastructure.
GVNP is important because the telecom industry is moving toward cloud-native, virtualized deployments where traditional physical security assumptions no longer hold. It provides a standardized way to assure the security of virtualized products, facilitating vendor interoperability and operator trust. By being generic, it avoids fragmentation and speeds up the certification process for new products. GVNP is expected to evolve with emerging technologies like Kubernetes, service meshes, and zero-trust architectures.
Purpose & Motivation
GVNP was created to address the security challenges introduced by the virtualization and cloud-native transformation of telecom networks. Traditional security assurance specifications were designed for physical network elements and did not adequately cover virtualized environments, where threats such as hypervisor compromise, container escape, and insecure APIs are prevalent. Operators needed a consistent, generic set of security requirements for VNFs and CNFs to ensure a baseline level of security across multi-vendor deployments.
Previous approaches were either function-specific (e.g., SCAS for AMF) or vendor-proprietary, leading to duplication and inconsistency. GVNP solves this by providing a generic framework that can be applied to any virtualized network product, reducing the effort required to secure and certify products. It also aligns with broader industry efforts (ETSI NFV, ONAP, CNCF) to secure cloud-native infrastructure. The motivation includes regulatory requirements, operator risk management, and the need to accelerate the adoption of virtualized networks without compromising security.
