Description

The E-DCH active set is a fundamental concept in UMTS/HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) networks, specifically for the Enhanced Dedicated Channel (E-DCH) which enables high-speed uplink packet access (HSUPA). It represents the group of cells within the UTRAN (UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network) that are configured to receive and process E-DCH transmissions from a specific User Equipment (UE). The active set is maintained by the RNC (Radio Network Controller) and signaled to the UE via RRC (Radio Resource Control) messages. Only cells for which an E-HICH (E-DCH Hybrid ARQ Indicator Channel) configuration is stored are considered part of the E-DCH active set. This ensures that the UE can receive HARQ feedback from each cell in the set, which is essential for reliable uplink data transmission.

The E-DCH active set is closely tied to the concept of soft handover in the uplink. When a UE is in soft handover, multiple NodeBs can receive the UE's E-DCH transmissions, and the RNC combines the received data to improve reliability. The E-DCH active set is a subset of the overall active set (which includes cells for the dedicated physical channels). The E-DCH active set can be updated through RRC signaling when the UE moves or when radio conditions change. The serving E-DCH cell is a special cell within the active set that controls the UE's scheduling and grants. In CELL_FACH state and Idle mode for FDD, the E-DCH active set is restricted to only the Serving E-DCH cell, as specified in later releases. This simplifies the operation and reduces signaling overhead for UEs in these states.

The E-DCH active set is managed through various procedures defined in 3GPP specifications such as 25.331 (RRC protocol), 25.321 (MAC protocol), and 25.319 (Enhanced uplink; Overall description). The RNC decides which cells should be in the active set based on measurement reports from the UE and network conditions. The UE is informed of the E-DCH active set through the Active Set Update procedure, which includes the E-DCH radio link information. The E-DCH active set is also relevant for the E-DCH absolute grant channel (E-AGCH) and E-DCH relative grant channel (E-RGCH), which are used for scheduling. The serving E-DCH cell transmits these grants, and the UE monitors them from the serving cell. In soft handover, the non-serving cells can send relative grants to adjust the UE's transmit power.

The E-DCH active set is a key enabler for HSUPA's high uplink throughput and coverage. By allowing multiple cells to receive the UE's transmission, it improves the uplink link budget and reduces the risk of call drops. However, it also introduces complexity in terms of scheduling and HARQ combining. The E-DCH active set is distinct from the E-DCH serving cell set, which includes the serving cell and potentially other cells that can provide scheduling grants. The active set concept is also used in other radio access technologies like CDMA2000, but the E-DCH active set is specific to UMTS/HSPA. In later releases, enhancements such as the introduction of the E-DCH active set for CELL_FACH and Idle mode have further optimized the operation for packet data traffic.

In summary, the E-DCH active set is a critical component of UMTS/HSPA uplink operation, ensuring reliable and efficient uplink packet data transmission. It is maintained through RRC signaling and involves coordination between the UE, NodeBs, and RNC. Understanding the E-DCH active set is essential for engineers working on UMTS network optimization and handover management.

Purpose & Motivation

The E-DCH active set exists to manage the set of cells that can receive and process uplink E-DCH transmissions from a UE in UMTS/HSPA networks. It solves the problem of uplink soft handover by allowing multiple cells to receive the UE's data, thereby improving reliability and coverage. Before HSUPA, uplink transmissions were handled by a single cell, which limited uplink throughput and coverage. The E-DCH active set enables macro diversity combining in the uplink, which enhances the link budget and reduces interference.

The concept was introduced in Release 6 as part of the HSUPA feature. It was motivated by the need to support high-speed uplink packet data with improved coverage and capacity. The active set mechanism allows the network to dynamically manage which cells are involved in receiving the UE's uplink data, based on radio conditions and network load. This flexibility is essential for maintaining quality of service in a mobile environment.

In later releases, the E-DCH active set was refined for UEs in CELL_FACH state and Idle mode, where it is restricted to the serving cell only. This simplification reduces signaling and power consumption for UEs that are not actively transmitting large amounts of data. The E-DCH active set continues to be a fundamental concept in UMTS/HSPA networks, even as newer technologies like LTE and 5G have emerged.

Evolution Across Releases

Rel-6 Initial

Initial definition introduced with HSUPA: the E-DCH active set is the set of cells carrying the E-DCH for one UE, considering only radio links with an E-HICH configuration stored. This enabled uplink soft handover and macro diversity.

Definition carried over unchanged from Rel-6; no modifications to the E-DCH active set concept.

Wording changed to specify that for FDD, in CELL_FACH state and Idle mode, the E-DCH active set consists of the Serving E-DCH cell only. This restricted the active set for UEs in these states to simplify operation and reduce signaling.

Definition carried over unchanged from Rel-8; the restriction for CELL_FACH and Idle mode remained.

Definition carried over unchanged from Rel-8; no further modifications.
