Description
The Data field element is a fundamental concept in the Radio Link Control (RLC) protocol, which operates in the data link layer of the 3GPP radio access network (LTE and NR). It refers to an RLC Service Data Unit (SDU) or a segment of an RLC SDU that is placed into the Data field of an RLC Protocol Data Unit (PDU). The RLC layer is responsible for segmentation, reassembly, and error correction of data transferred between the User Equipment (UE) and the base station (eNodeB or gNB). The Data field element is the actual payload that the RLC layer transports, excluding the RLC header.
In the RLC architecture, SDUs arrive from upper layers (e.g., PDCP) and are processed according to the configured RLC mode: Transparent Mode (TM), Unacknowledged Mode (UM), or Acknowledged Mode (AM). In TM, the RLC entity does not add any header and passes the SDU directly to the MAC layer; thus, the Data field element is the entire SDU. In UM and AM, the RLC entity may segment the SDU into smaller pieces to fit the available transport block size. Each segment, along with the necessary header fields (e.g., Sequence Number, Framing Info), forms an RLC PDU. The Data field element is the portion of the SDU or SDU segment that is carried in the Data field of that PDU.
The Data field element is crucial for ensuring reliable and efficient data transfer over the radio interface. In AM, the RLC layer uses Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) to request retransmissions of lost or corrupted PDUs. The Data field element, being the payload, is what ultimately gets delivered to the upper layers after successful reassembly. The size of the Data field element depends on the transport block size and the RLC configuration, and it can vary dynamically based on radio conditions and scheduling decisions.
With the introduction of 5G NR, the RLC protocol has been enhanced to support new services with diverse requirements, such as ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) and enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB). The Data field element concept remains unchanged, but the RLC layer now operates with higher data rates and more flexible numerology. The term is defined in 3GPP TS 36.322 (LTE) and TS 38.322 (NR), which specify the RLC protocol in detail.
Understanding the Data field element is essential for engineers working on protocol stack implementation, performance analysis, and optimization of radio access networks. It provides a clear abstraction of the payload within RLC PDUs, facilitating the design and testing of RLC entities.
Purpose & Motivation
The Data field element concept exists to precisely define the payload portion of an RLC PDU within the 3GPP protocol specifications. It solves the problem of ambiguity in describing how upper-layer data is encapsulated and transported over the radio interface. By distinguishing between the RLC header and the Data field, the specifications enable clear implementation of segmentation, reassembly, and multiplexing functions.
Before the formal definition of Data field element, engineers might have used vague terms like 'payload' or 'data' when referring to the contents of an RLC PDU. The standardization of this term ensures that all vendors and operators have a common understanding of what constitutes the user data within an RLC PDU, which is critical for interoperability and testing. It also facilitates the mapping between RLC SDUs and PDUs, a key aspect of RLC operation.
The introduction of the term in Rel-8 coincided with the development of LTE, where the RLC protocol was significantly enhanced compared to earlier generations. The need for a precise term became apparent as RLC modes (TM, UM, AM) and features like segmentation and concatenation were specified in detail. The Data field element term has since been carried forward to 5G NR, demonstrating its enduring relevance in modern radio access networks.
