Description

A carrier aggregation band is defined by 3GPP as a set of one or more operating bands across which multiple NR or E-UTRA carriers are aggregated with a specific set of technical requirements. It is the regulatory and technical construct that specifies which combinations of frequency bands may be used simultaneously for carrier aggregation, and what RF performance requirements apply to those combinations. Each carrier aggregation band is identified by a specific notation, such as CA_1A-3A for intra-band or inter-band E-UTRA aggregation, or CA_n78A-n79A for NR aggregation.

The concept addresses a fundamental challenge in carrier aggregation: when multiple carriers are aggregated, the resulting RF signal spans a wider bandwidth than any single carrier, and the transmitter and receiver must meet requirements that account for the combined signal. These requirements include maximum output power, power spectral density, adjacent channel leakage ratio (ACLR), spurious emissions, reference sensitivity, and blocking characteristics. Because different band combinations have different frequency separations, duplex modes (FDD/TDD), and harmonic relationships, the technical requirements must be specified per aggregation band combination.

Carrier aggregation bands are classified into several types. Intra-band contiguous aggregation uses carriers within the same operating band that are adjacent in frequency, requiring a single wideband transmitter and receiver. Intra-band non-contiguous aggregation uses carriers in the same band but separated by a gap, requiring multiple transceivers or a wideband transceiver with gap handling. Inter-band aggregation uses carriers in different operating bands, which may have different duplex modes and propagation characteristics, requiring multiple transceiver chains. Each type has distinct technical requirements and implementation challenges.

The specification of carrier aggregation bands is a collaborative effort between 3GPP and regional regulatory bodies. 3GPP defines the technical requirements in specifications such as TS 36.101 (E-UTRA UE radio transmission and reception), TS 38.101 (NR UE radio transmission and reception), and TS 37.104/37.141 (multi-RAT base station requirements). Regional bodies and operator groups then select which combinations to support based on available spectrum. This ensures that devices and networks can interoperate across different regions while meeting local regulatory constraints.

Carrier aggregation bands are closely tied to UE capability signalling. A UE indicates which carrier aggregation band combinations it supports, and the network uses this information to configure aggregation. The network must ensure that the configured aggregation is supported by both the UE and the base station, and that the combined operation meets all applicable RF requirements. This makes carrier aggregation bands a critical element in the end-to-end chain from spectrum allocation to device certification to network deployment.

Purpose & Motivation

Carrier aggregation bands exist to solve the problem of specifying RF requirements for multi-carrier operation in a structured, testable way. When carrier aggregation was introduced in Rel-10, it became clear that simply defining requirements for individual carriers was insufficient: the combined signal from multiple carriers has different spectral characteristics, and the transmitter and receiver must be designed and tested against the aggregated signal. The carrier aggregation band concept provides a framework for defining these combined requirements.

Before this concept, each operating band had its own set of requirements, but there was no systematic way to describe combinations of bands for aggregation. As the number of supported band combinations grew — reaching hundreds in later releases — a structured naming and specification approach became essential. The carrier aggregation band provides this structure, enabling 3GPP to specify requirements for each combination and enabling device vendors to declare support for specific combinations.

The concept also addresses the need for global harmonisation. Different regions use different frequency bands, and operators deploy different combinations. By defining carrier aggregation bands as sets of operating bands with specific requirements, 3GPP enables a modular approach where new combinations can be added as spectrum becomes available, without redefining the underlying framework. This flexibility has been crucial for the global rollout of carrier aggregation and, later, for NR carrier aggregation and EN-DC (E-UTRA-NR dual connectivity).
