Description

The Access Stratum Identifier (AS ID) is a fundamental identifier introduced in 3GPP Release 19 to support advanced device-to-device (D2D) communication scenarios, particularly for the R2D (Relay-to-Device) and D2R (Device-to-Relay) links. It operates at the Access Stratum (AS) layer, which is responsible for the protocols and procedures between the User Equipment (UE) and the Radio Access Network (RAN). The AS ID serves as a unique address for a specific device within a given context, allowing the network or other devices to direct messages, scheduling grants, and feedback specifically to that device.

In the context of R2D reception, the AS ID is used by the transmitting entity (e.g., a relay node or gNB) to address the intended receiver device. When a device is scheduled to receive data on the R2D link, the scheduling information includes the AS ID of the target device, ensuring that only the intended device processes the transmission. Similarly, for D2R scheduling, the AS ID identifies which device is being scheduled to transmit on the D2R link, allowing the network to manage uplink resources efficiently. This is particularly important in scenarios where multiple devices share the same relay or network resources, as it prevents collisions and ensures fair resource allocation.

Furthermore, the AS ID is used in the NACK Feedback message. In D2D communication, feedback mechanisms are crucial for reliable data transfer. When a device fails to decode a transmission, it sends a Negative Acknowledgement (NACK) to request retransmission. The NACK Feedback message includes the AS ID of the device that detected the failure, enabling the transmitter to identify which device needs the retransmission and to adjust its scheduling accordingly. This targeted feedback mechanism improves the efficiency of retransmissions and reduces unnecessary overhead.

The AS ID is assigned and managed by the network during connection establishment or configuration procedures. It is typically a temporary identifier that is valid for the duration of a communication session or until explicitly released. The exact format and length of the AS ID are defined in 3GPP specifications (e.g., TS 38.300 and TS 38.391), ensuring interoperability between different vendors' equipment. The introduction of the AS ID in Release 19 reflects the growing importance of direct device communication in 5G-Advanced and future networks, where low-latency, high-reliability links between devices are essential for applications such as industrial IoT, public safety, and vehicular communication.

In summary, the AS ID is a critical enabler for efficient and reliable device-to-device communication in 3GPP networks. By providing a unique address for each device at the Access Stratum layer, it allows precise scheduling, targeted feedback, and effective resource management, paving the way for advanced services in Release 19 and beyond.

Purpose & Motivation

The AS ID was introduced to address the need for a unique identifier at the Access Stratum layer to support direct device-to-device communication in 5G-Advanced networks. Prior to Release 19, D2D communication relied on less efficient mechanisms for addressing and scheduling, which could lead to ambiguity and increased overhead when multiple devices were involved. The AS ID solves this by providing a clear, unambiguous way to identify a specific device for R2D reception, D2R scheduling, and NACK feedback.

The motivation for the AS ID stems from the growing demand for low-latency, high-reliability communication between devices, particularly in scenarios such as industrial automation, vehicle-to-everything (V2X), and public safety. In these use cases, direct communication between devices without going through the network can reduce latency and improve reliability. However, managing such communication requires precise addressing to avoid collisions and ensure that resources are allocated fairly. The AS ID enables the network to schedule transmissions and feedback efficiently, even when many devices are involved.

Additionally, the AS ID facilitates the implementation of advanced feedback mechanisms. In traditional cellular systems, feedback is often sent to the base station, which then relays it to the transmitter. In direct D2D communication, feedback can be sent directly between devices, but this requires a way to identify the source of the feedback. The AS ID provides this identification, allowing the transmitter to quickly determine which device needs retransmission and to adjust its transmission parameters accordingly. This reduces latency and improves overall system efficiency.

TS 38.300Rel-18 → Rel-19

Rel-19 adds multi-hop L2 UE-to-Network relay for NR sidelink as the largest item. It also adds low-power wake-up signal and receiver (LP-WUS/WUR) text, on-demand SSB and SIB1 for network energy savings, and sub-band full duplex for TDD carriers.
