Description

Aggregated BS Channel Bandwidth is a fundamental radio-frequency (RF) parameter defined in 3GPP TS 38.104 and TS 38.141 for 5G NR base stations (gNodeB). It specifies the total RF bandwidth, measured in MHz, that a base station can transmit and receive when multiple component carriers (CCs) are contiguously aggregated. Unlike the channel bandwidth of a single carrier, which is limited to a maximum of 100 MHz in FR1 and 400 MHz in FR2, the aggregated BS channel bandwidth allows the base station to operate over a much wider contiguous spectrum block, enabling higher peak data rates and more efficient use of fragmented spectrum holdings.

The concept is rooted in carrier aggregation (CA), a technique introduced in LTE-Advanced and carried into 5G NR. In CA, multiple component carriers are combined at the physical layer to form a wider effective channel. When these carriers are contiguous in frequency, the base station must be capable of transmitting and receiving across the entire aggregated span without gaps. The aggregated BS channel bandwidth defines this span. For example, if an operator aggregates four contiguous 20 MHz carriers in band n78, the aggregated BS channel bandwidth would be 80 MHz. The base station's RF front-end, power amplifiers, and filters must be designed to handle this full bandwidth, which imposes stringent requirements on linearity, noise figure, and out-of-band emissions.

From an architectural perspective, the aggregated BS channel bandwidth is a base station capability, not a UE capability. It is declared by the manufacturer and verified through conformance testing. The parameter influences several aspects of network planning and deployment: it determines the maximum number of resource blocks (RBs) that can be scheduled across the aggregated carriers, affects the design of the base station antenna system, and impacts inter-modulation and blocking performance. In 3GPP specifications, the aggregated BS channel bandwidth is used alongside other RF parameters such as operating band, carrier center frequency, and subcarrier spacing to define the complete RF profile of a base station.

The measurement and verification of aggregated BS channel bandwidth are covered in TS 38.141 (conducted and radiated conformance testing). Test cases ensure that the base station meets transmit power, unwanted emissions, and receiver sensitivity requirements across the entire aggregated bandwidth. This is critical because contiguous aggregation can create challenging conditions, such as high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) and spectral regrowth, which must be managed to avoid interference with adjacent bands.

In summary, Aggregated BS Channel Bandwidth is a key RF parameter that enables wideband operation in 5G NR by allowing base stations to transmit and receive over multiple contiguous carriers. It is essential for achieving the high data rates and capacity targets of IMT-2020 and is a prerequisite for advanced features like ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) and enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB).

Purpose & Motivation

The Aggregated BS Channel Bandwidth parameter exists to define and regulate the maximum contiguous RF spectrum a base station can utilize when aggregating multiple carriers. It solves the problem of spectrum fragmentation and limited single-carrier bandwidth by allowing operators to combine contiguous spectrum blocks into a wider effective channel, thereby increasing peak throughput and spectral efficiency. Without this definition, there would be no standardized way to specify, test, and certify base station RF performance across aggregated carriers, leading to interoperability issues and inefficient spectrum use.

Historically, early cellular systems (2G, 3G) used fixed channel bandwidths (e.g., 200 kHz, 5 MHz) and did not support carrier aggregation. The introduction of LTE-Advanced in Rel-10 brought carrier aggregation, but the focus was on UE capabilities. In 5G NR, the need for wider bandwidths (up to 100 MHz per carrier in FR1 and 400 MHz in FR2) made the base station's aggregated bandwidth a critical design parameter. The Aggregated BS Channel Bandwidth was introduced in Rel-15 to provide a clear specification for base station operation with contiguous CA, ensuring that network equipment can handle the wideband signals required for eMBB and other advanced services.

By standardizing this parameter, 3GPP enables consistent testing and certification, facilitates multi-vendor interoperability, and provides operators with a clear framework for deploying wideband base stations. It also supports regulatory compliance by defining the spectral boundaries within which the base station must operate.
