Description

The 3GPP System Mobile Termination (MT) is a functional entity within the Mobile Station (MS) that provides the functions specific to the management of the radio interface, known as the Um interface in GERAN and Uu in UTRAN/E-UTRAN. It is responsible for the lower-layer protocols and radio-related procedures that allow the mobile device to access the network. The MT encompasses the physical layer, data link layer, and radio resource control functions necessary for establishing, maintaining, and releasing radio connections.

In the 3GPP architecture, the Mobile Station is logically divided into the Mobile Termination (MT) and Terminal Equipment (TE). The MT handles all radio-specific functions, while the TE hosts user applications and interfaces with the user. The MT communicates with the TE through the Terminal Equipment interface (e.g., AT commands or other local interfaces). This separation allows the MT to be independent of the specific services and applications running on the TE.

The MT performs several critical functions: it manages the radio link, including modulation/demodulation, channel coding, and power control; it handles radio resource management procedures such as cell selection, handover, and radio bearer establishment; and it executes the necessary protocols for mobility management and session management in conjunction with the core network. The MT also participates in security functions like ciphering and integrity protection of radio signaling and user data.

Over successive 3GPP releases, the definition of the 3GPP System Mobile Termination has remained stable, reflecting its fundamental role in the radio access architecture. The term is defined in 3GPP TS 21.905, the vocabulary for 3GPP specifications. While the underlying technologies have evolved from GSM to UMTS, LTE, and 5G NR, the conceptual role of the MT as the radio interface manager within the mobile station persists. In modern multi-RAT devices, the MT functionality may be implemented across multiple radio access technologies, but the principle of separating radio-specific functions from terminal equipment remains.

The MT is essential for enabling mobile connectivity. It abstracts the complexity of the radio interface from the applications and services, providing a reliable link to the network. Its functions ensure that the mobile device can efficiently use the available radio resources, maintain connectivity while moving, and secure communications over the air.

Purpose & Motivation

The 3GPP System Mobile Termination exists to manage the radio interface between the mobile station and the access network. It solves the problem of providing a standardized, reliable, and secure radio connection for mobile devices, independent of the specific applications or services. Historically, as mobile networks evolved from analog to digital, the need for a clear separation between radio-specific functions and user applications became evident. The MT concept allows the same terminal equipment to be used with different radio access technologies by simply changing the MT, and it enables network operators to manage radio resources efficiently without affecting user applications.

The MT also addresses the need for mobility and seamless service continuity. By handling radio resource management, handovers, and power control, the MT ensures that the mobile device can move across cells and networks while maintaining ongoing sessions. Security is another key motivation: the MT implements ciphering and integrity protection, protecting user data and signaling from eavesdropping and tampering over the vulnerable radio link.

In summary, the 3GPP System Mobile Termination is a foundational concept that enables the modular and efficient design of mobile stations, facilitating interoperability, mobility, and security in 3GPP networks.
