Description
The 3G-324M terminal is a user equipment that supports video telephony and multimedia services over 3GPP circuit-switched (CS) networks. It is based on the ITU-T H.324 recommendation, which defines a framework for low-bitrate multimedia communication over circuit-switched networks. 3GPP has modified and profiled H.324 to suit the specific characteristics of 3G mobile networks, resulting in the 3G-324M standard. This terminal is specified in 3GPP Technical Specifications 26.110, 26.111, and 26.911.
The 3G-324M terminal implements a multiplexing protocol (H.223) that combines video, audio, and data streams into a single bitstream for transmission over a 64 kbps circuit-switched channel. It uses H.245 for call control and capability exchange, and supports video codecs such as H.263 and MPEG-4, and audio codecs such as AMR and G.723.1. The terminal also includes error resilience mechanisms to cope with the higher error rates typical of mobile radio channels.
Architecturally, the 3G-324M terminal connects to the CS domain of a 3G network (e.g., UMTS) via a radio access network. The CS core network provides a dedicated 64 kbps circuit for the duration of the call, ensuring a constant bitrate and low latency, which is essential for real-time video. The terminal may also support interworking with other video telephony systems, such as H.323 or SIP-based systems, through gateways.
Key features of the 3G-324M terminal include support for point-to-point video calls, multipoint conferencing (via a Multipoint Control Unit), and data sharing (e.g., for file transfer or whiteboarding). It also supports supplementary services like call forwarding and call barring, inherited from the CS domain. Security is provided at the radio interface through encryption, but the 3G-324M standard itself does not define end-to-end security.
The 3G-324M terminal was widely deployed in the early 2000s as the first generation of mobile video telephony. It allowed operators to offer video calling services before the advent of all-IP networks. Although it has been largely superseded by IMS-based video telephony, it remains important for legacy support and in regions where CS networks are still in use.
Purpose & Motivation
The 3G-324M terminal was created to enable video telephony and multimedia services over circuit-switched 3G networks. At the time of its introduction, circuit-switched networks provided reliable, low-latency connections ideal for real-time video, but they lacked a standardized way to handle multimedia. The ITU-T H.324 recommendation provided a basis, but it needed adaptation for mobile networks, which have different bandwidth, error characteristics, and signalling protocols.
3GPP modified H.324 to create 3G-324M, addressing issues such as call setup, codec negotiation, and error resilience. The terminal solves the problem of interoperability by defining a common set of protocols and codecs that ensure different vendors' terminals can communicate. It also allows operators to offer video calling as a premium service, leveraging existing CS infrastructure without requiring a full IP upgrade.
The 3G-324M terminal was a significant step towards mobile multimedia, but it had limitations: it required a dedicated 64 kbps circuit, which was inefficient for packet data, and it could not easily integrate with IP-based services. These limitations motivated the development of IMS and SIP-based multimedia telephony, which eventually replaced 3G-324M in most networks.
