Description
Point to Multipoint – Multicast (PTM-M) refers to the multicast mode of PTM services, where data is delivered from a single source to a specific group of users who have actively subscribed to or joined the service. Unlike broadcast, which targets all users in an area, PTM-M targets only authorized recipients, making it suitable for subscription-based or premium content services. This mode is a fundamental part of the MBMS framework.
The technical operation involves several stages. First, users subscribe to a multicast service, often through a service announcement mechanism. When the service is active, the network establishes a multicast bearer. In the core network, the BM-SC handles subscription management, key distribution for service encryption (for paid content), and initiates the session toward the RAN. In the radio network, the multicast data is scheduled on a shared channel (e.g., MTCH in LTE/NR). Only cells with subscribed users active will transmit the data, conserving radio resources. Key protocols include MBMS-specific GTP for user plane, and control plane signaling for session start/stop and membership management.
PTM-M's role is to enable efficient, scalable delivery of content like live TV, radio, file downloads, or software updates to a large but defined audience. It optimizes network resources by transmitting data once over shared links and replicating it as late as possible in the network topology. This mode is essential for commercial content delivery, as it allows for service-specific charging, digital rights management, and guaranteed quality of service for subscribers.
Purpose & Motivation
PTM-M was created to address the need for a middle ground between inefficient unicast and indiscriminate broadcast. Pure broadcast wastes resources by transmitting to areas with no interested users, while unicast to many users does not scale. PTM-M solves the problem of efficiently delivering content to a large, geographically dispersed group of users who have opted in, such as subscribers to a mobile TV package.
The historical context is tied to the development of MBMS, where service providers sought a way to offer premium multimedia services profitably. PTM-M enables subscription management, content protection through encryption, and targeted delivery, which are necessary for a viable business model. It addresses the limitations of earlier content delivery methods that lacked these granular controls.
Furthermore, PTM-M supports applications like over-the-air software updates for IoT devices or fleet management, where updates need to be sent to a specific set of devices. Its purpose is to provide a network-efficient, secure, and manageable method for one-to-many content distribution where audience membership is known and controlled, facilitating new service offerings and revenue streams for operators.
