EFAP operates on audio signals that are part of a scene description, often using formats like MPEG-I Immersive Audio.

Architecturally, EFAP is implemented as a component within a media processing engine, which could reside in a network-based media processing node (like an edge server in a 5G MEC environment) or within the user's device (UE). The function takes as input audio objects with associated metadata defining their desired spatial position. As the position metadata changes over time (e.g., due to user interaction or pre-authored animation), EFAP calculates the necessary gain factors for each output channel (e.g., left, right, surround speakers, or binaural rendering for headphones) to create the perception of movement. The 'Edge Fading' aspect refers to its ability to handle transitions specifically at the boundaries or 'edges' of the audio scene or between distinct audio zones, ensuring no abrupt jumps or clicks in the audio.

How EFAP works involves continuous interpolation of amplitude coefficients based on the positional trajectory of an audio object. For example, if an audio object is programmed to move from the front-left speaker to the front-right speaker, EFAP will gradually decrease the gain applied to the front-left channel while increasing the gain for the front-right channel over the duration of the movement.
